Beginning in July 2018, Google’s Chrome will Mark Non-HTTPS Sites as Not Secure

July was a big month for Google. They announced a Speed Update ranking algorithm for mobile sites, and they also announced that all sites that have not migrated to HTTPS will be marked as “not secure” in the address bar.

This update coincides with the release of Chrome 68, and is easily recognizable to the left of the URL in the address bar.

Google has been on a mission to get webmasters to make the change to HTTPS web sites for years, and has even gone so far as to hint at a rankings boost as an incentive. According to the following statistics, their efforts have been successful:

  • More than 68% of Chrome traffic on Android and Windows is protected
  • More than 78% of traffic on Chrome OS and Chrome for Mac is now protected
  • 81 of the top 100 sites on the web use HTTPS by default

Depending on the size and scope of your application, migrating from HTTP to HTTPS can be a significant task – but the rewards are worth the effort now more than ever.
