Google Plans to Launch Doorway Page Penalty

In an attempt to stop site creators from using doorway pages to rank for certain keywords, Google announced they will be releasing an adjusted ranking algorithm that will penalize sites that they suspect of using doorway pages. Google has updated what they consider to be doorway pages, citing examples including:

  • “Having multiple domain names or pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page”
  • “Pages generated to funnel visitors into the actual usable or relevant portion of your site(s)”
  • “Substantially similar pages that are closer to search results than a clearly defined, browseable hierarchy”(1)

Google urges you to consider the following questions.

  1. Is each page on your site important to the site overall or does it simply act as a funnel to get users to the page they need?
  2. Do the pages contain duplicate content, causing the same info to rank multiple times under the same search terms?
  3. Are your pages intended only to generate affiliate traffic and then send the users along without providing any useful and unique information?
  4. Do you have pages that exist as islands, meaning they’re very hard or impossible to naturally navigate to within the site?
  5. And lastly, do you have pages on your site that rank for very generic terms, but have specific information on them?

If any of these questions makes you rethink a page or two on your site, it’s best to fix it sooner rather than later. Google is strongly pushing for websites to be full of rich, unique content these days and this is just one more way they’re getting that to happen.
