Why Technical SEO Matters

Technical SEOQuality content and relative links are typically recognized as important parts of the SEO picture, but something that goes without proper attention is technical SEO.

A Google search quality senior strategist recently said that content, links, and RankBrain are the most important ranking factors, and the SEO world ran with that info. Since then, much emphasis has been placed on those three signals.

However, with so much attention being placed on those three ranking factors, an equally important factor called technical SEO sometimes goes without the proper emphasis. If you don’t get your technical SEO right, the other three factors may not make much of a difference in getting you ranked.

With poor technical SEO, your website may be uncrawlable, unindexable, and inaccessible. So even with the best content, search engines won’t be able to access it, meaning it’s doing nothing for you.

The following tweaks will help give you an edge when it comes to technical SEO:

Enable HTTPS

Enabling HTTPS is a tweak that only takes a few minutes of your time, yet can yield significant results for rankings. Google admits that it uses HTTPS as a ranking signal – though they also say the impact isn’t high. Still, evidence suggests that Google gives preference to HTTPS enabled sites.

Pay attention to your web host

Your web host has more control over rankings than you might think. Website speed is a technical ranking factor, and your host’s server specifications and configuration will influence your site’s speed.

Take into consideration server downtime as well. An odd one-day downtime typically won’t have a large impact, but intermittent downtimes caused by poor hosting will.

Prepare for mobile-first indexing

Studies show that there are more mobile internet users than desktop users, and Google themselves has said that a majority of searchers on their platform are mobile users. As a result, Google has begun rolling out mobile-first indexing for web users.

This can be a problem for you if:

  • Your site is not optimized for mobile readers
  • The mobile version of your site is poorly-optimized compared to your desktop version

You need to make sure your site is responsive on all types of devices. As an alternative, you can design a separate version of your site for mobile users. Whatever your approach may be, do not neglect mobile visitors.

Enable Google Search Console

Formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools, one of the best things you can do when it comes to your technical SEO is enabling Google Search Console. This dashboard is provided by Google and it allows you to monitor the health of your website. It will notify you of technical issues that could negatively impact rankings such as crawling issues, security, mobile usability errors, and much more.
